The question about whether staying at rehab shows up on a background check is one we get asked a lot, in this page we will aim to provide a definitive answer to the question.
If you enter private rehab, congratulations. You have made a brilliant decision to turn your life around and create a healthier and happier future. However, you may have concerns regarding your life after rehab.
Naturally, you will want to reintegrate into society. This may be starting a new career, finding a job, or going back to study. All of these take courage and dedication.
Your first thought may be – will I be penalised for having been to rehab? Will it show up on a background check when I apply for a new job? Will my new employer want to hire me if they know I have been to rehab?
We are going to talk through that to educate and update you on the situation. Rehab and medical information are always protected. Nobody can access your files.
There are many laws that protect you from this. So to answer your question quickly before we move on, no. Rehab does not show up on a background check.
An employment background check is usually completed after you apply for a job. The background check is used to verify that all the information provided by you is legitimate.
Employers may perform this task themselves, or it may be run by a third-party company. It will help the business make a well-informed decision on the employee they choose.
Prior to running an employment background check, you as the prospective employee must authorise this and you must agree to the check.
This personal information will be gathered on a document which will accompany your full job application. It is often done for specific types of jobs that require a responsible adult, such as within health, law or teaching professions.
This check may also be run on people working with children, the elderly or people with disabilities. It is vital that the employee is responsible and has no criminal background.
If you are worried about the stigma of rehab and drug and alcohol addiction, we can at least put some of your worries at ease. Unless your addiction has led you to making poor decisions, such as criminal activity, this may pose a threat. After all, a criminal record can hinder finding a job. But again, this will not be related back to your rehab.
The short answer is no. Rehab treatment and therapy does not show up on a background check. In short, this is related to your privacy rights and you do not need to worry about this.
Therefore, it makes rehab an even more attractive prospect, because not only will you not have to share this information, but you will have incredible tools to make your new career a true reality.
You have many privacy rights when you enter and after you exit rehab. Every piece of information is safe within the GDPR requirements.
Any data stored will be confidential and if this information must be shared with a third party, you must ensure that you agree to the data being shared. This puts the power in your hands.
Privacy rights also spread further to your time out of rehab. As we previously mentioned, you do not need to disclose your drug or alcohol rehab stay to anyone.
If you leave your job for rehab, you do not need to legally disclose the reason why. There can be many medical reasons why and medical notes can back this up.
Privacy rights also mean that you do not need to tell any prospective employer that you were in rehab. The only person that should need to know about your rehab would be your GP or any medical personnel that would follow up with you for health checks afterwards, or prior to your treatment. There is no need to feel shame or worry about entering inpatient drug rehab.
It is respectable and admired to enter rehab voluntarily. It is seen as a positive and strength of mind. Therefore, do not let this stop you from entering. You have privacy rights and protection.
You will have access to an extensive aftercare plan when you exit rehab. This will be created by a team of professionals that can create the best course of action for you.
This may include more follow-up therapy sessions, including counselling and more. This aftercare will allow you to seamlessly integrate back into society and form a new pathway.
If you desire to change careers or go to study, then it is important that we support you mentally and physically to ensure this goal is reached.
An aftercare plan and a type of outpatient rehabilitation plan will allow you to deal with problems and stresses that arise after. This can be
dealt with in individual and group discussions.
Partners, family members and caregivers can be included in the therapy so that after rehab, you can feel ready to deal with society and the pressure that it may bring.
You can find work again following rehab. As long as you are actively searching for work, you will undoubtedly find something.
There are many sites that you can search on. After all, a future employer wants someone who has the willingness to learn and
show an interest in the company you are applying to.
If you want to study and change careers, then your therapist will be able to assist you with finding the best university or college and making the best possible decisions.
However you must remember that this journey to a new life will also take care and planning. Within the framework of an aftercare plan, you will learn how to cope with and solve stress, conflicts and problems without the need to resort to using the addictive substance again.
It is a successful and proven method for a journey towards a healthier and happier life. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact us to see how we can help you in creating this pathway today.
